The family lived in the island town of Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras state.
The parents of the speaker were Jainulabdeen and Ashiamma. They belonged to middle-class Tamil family. Jainulabdeen had not much wealth. He found an ideal helpmate in Ashiamma. He was very simple, and avoided any kind of inessential comfort and luxury in life. He was always dutiful, and therefore, he provided all necessities like food, medicine and clothing to everyone of his family. Ashiamma was also a kind-hearted lady. In a word, they lived a happy life.

বক্তার বাবা-মা ছিলেন জৈনুলআবদীন এবং আশিয়াম্ম্ম। তাঁরা মধ্যবিত্ত তামিল পরিবারের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। জৈনুলআবদীনের তেমন সম্পদ ছিল না। তিনি আশিয়াম্মার মধ্যে এক আদর্শ জীবনসঙ্গী খুঁজে পেয়েছিলেন। তিনি খুব সাধারণ ছিলেন, এবং জীবনে যেকোনও ধরণের অপ্রয়োজনীয় স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য এবং বিলাসিতা এড়িয়ে চলতেন। তিনি সর্বদা দায়িত্বশীল ছিলেন এবং তাই তিনি তাঁর পরিবারের প্রত্যেককে খাবার, ওষুধ এবং পোশাকের মতো সমস্ত প্রয়োজনীয় সামগ্রী সরবরাহ করেছিলেন। আশিয়াম্মাও ছিলেন এক মমতাময়ী মহিলা। এক কথায় তারা সুখী জীবন কাটিয়েছিল।
