Answer:
         The cruel law that prevailed in Ephesus was that if any merchant of Syracuse was found in Ephesus, he would be sentenced to death unless he paid a ransom of one thousand marks.

       Aegeon was an old merchant of Syracuse. He did not know anything of that cruel law. So, he was arrested and asked to pay the fine. But Aegeon informed that he had no money. So, he was brought before the Duke to order him a death sentence. But the Duke asked Aegeon to  tell the story of his life and the reason why he had come to Ephesus. On hearing the story, the Duke was deeply moved and told him that though he had no power to alter the law or to pardon him, he gave Aegeon one day to try to pay the fine by any means.

    After being beaten by Antipholus of Syracuse, Elder Dromio who went to fetch Antipholus of Ephesus reported his mistres that her husband was reluctant to come to dinner. He even added that her husband told him that he had no wife at all. On hearing this, Adriana got furious. Driven by fury, Adriana reached the inn where Antipholus of Syracuse was conversing with his slave younger Dromio. She addressed Antipholus younger as her husband and rebuked him severely. Adriana even told him that how he had fallen in love with someone. She  insisted on him for going to her home for dinner as they had been waiting for him to dine togethet.

Ans.
        Aegeon was returning home along with his wife, twin sons and twin slaves from Epidamnum in a ship. Suddenly, they faced a violent storm. Aegeon, alongside his son younger Antipholus and younger slave Dromio was isolated from his wife and elder son. After spending seven years, a frantic desire grew in his heart to find his lost wife and both sons. In the course of his searching, he incidentally landed at Ephesus.

    There was cruel law in the land of Ephesus. If any Merchant of Syracuse was seen in Ephesus, he would be put to death unless he paid a thousand marks for the ransom of his life. As Aegeon was an old merchant of Syracuse and he had no money to pay the fine, he was in great danger at Ephesus.

        When Antipholus of Syracuse came out of Adriana's house, he met a goldsmith on the way. The goldsmith mistook Younger Antipholus as Antipholus of Ephesus and gave him a gold chain claiming that he had ordered it. And he went away. Immediately after, the goldsmith was arrested for his debt. He found the elder Antipholus passing by his way and asked for the payment of the chain. But Elder Antipholus denied having received the chain. They went on arguing about it. It was a matter of great confusion. At last, both the goldsmith and Elder Antipholus were arrested and taken into custody.

From the restaurant, he went forward leisurely to the depot. Before boarding the train he dropped a quarter-cent into the hat of a blind man. After three hours of train journey he reached the town where his friend Mike Dolan  had his cafe.

The police found it hard to arrest him. Only Ben Price knew his habits. But Jimmy escaped when he learnt that Ben Price was given the charge of investigation. He came to Elmore and took new name as Ralph D. Spencer. He opened a shoe-store. When Jimmy attracted the eyes of Miss Annabel Adams, he became an honest man. He did not even hesitate to sacrifice his glorious future in order to save the little child from the vault of the bank. In all, Jimmy was a very interesting character.

      Agatha was in danger because she had been shut in the vault by her elder sister in a spirit of play. The door could not be opened as the clock had not been wound, nor the combination set. There was not enough air inside. Moreover, she might go into convulsions from fright.

     In that dangerous situation, Annabel requested Ralph to do something. Ralph could not deny the request of his lady-love. Though he knew his action would reveal his true identity, he took up his instruments and broke the lock of the door within ten minutes and freed the frightened  child. Thus Agatha was saved.
