Question: What was the law that prevailed in Ephesus?  What did the Duke say to Aegeon when he became a victim of the law? [এফেসাস কী নিয়ম চলছিল? যখন ইজিয়ন সেই নিয়মের শিকার হন, ডিউক তাকে কি বলেছিলেন?]

Answer:
The cruel law that prevailed in Ephesus was that if any merchant of Syracuse was found in Ephesus, he would be sentenced to death unless he paid a ransom of one thousand marks.

Aegeon was an old merchant of Syracuse. He did not know anything of that cruel law. So, he was arrested and asked to pay the fine. But Aegeon informed that he had no money. So, he was brought before the Duke to order him a death sentence. But the Duke asked Aegeon to  tell the story of his life and the reason why he had come to Ephesus. On hearing the story, the Duke was deeply moved and told him that though he had no power to alter the law or to pardon him, he gave Aegeon one day to try to pay the fine by any means.
