40) The clock has not been wound nor the combination set.

 Ans. No one has wound the clock nor set the combination.

 41) They could just hear the faint sound of the child. 

Ans. The faint sound of the child could just be heard by them. 

42) Open the door.

 Ans. Let the door be opened.od 

43) Oh, break it open. 

Ans. Oh, let it be broken for opening. 

44) Can't you men do something? 

Ans. Can't something be done by you men?

45) Spencer, what shall we do?

 Ans. Spencer, what will be done by us? 

46) Agatha's mother beat the door of the vault with her hands.

  Ans. The door of the vault was beaten with her hands by Agatha's mother. 

       47) Somebody widly suggested dynamite. 

         Ans. Dynamite was suggested widly by someone. 

           Change  the narration

1) "Now, Velentine," said the warden, “you'll go out in the morning. Brace up". 

Ans. The warden then informed Valentine that he would go out in the morning and also told him to brace up.


2) "Fine," said Jimmy. "Got my key?". 

Ans. Jimmy informed that it was fine and asked if he got his key. 

3) "Isn't that young lady Polly Simpson?" asked Jimmy. 

Ans. Jimmy asked if that young lady was Polly Simpson. 

4) "Naw," said the boy. "She's Annabel Adams." 

Ans. The boy contradicted and informed that she was Annabel Adams.

 5) "Wouldn't I make a nice drummer?" said Annabel. 

Ans. Annabel asked if she would not make a nice drummer. 

6) "The door can't be opened," he groaned.

 Ans. He groaned that the door could not be opened. 

7) "Agatha!" he called as loudly as he could. "Listen to me." 

Ans. He called Agatha as loudly as he could and told her to listen to him. 

8) The mother wailed, "She will die of fright! Open the door!" 

Ans. The apprehensive mother wailed that she (Agatha) would die and she also pleaded to open the door. 

9) "There isn't a man nearer than Little Rock who can open that door," said Mr. Adams.

Ans. Mr. Adams informed that there was not a man nearer than Little Rock who could open that door.

 10) "Can't you do something, Ralph?" said Annabel. 

Ans. Annabel asked Ralph if he could do something.

 11) "Annabel," he said, "give me that rose you are wearing."

Ans. He asked Annabel to give him that rose he was wearing.

12) "Hello, Ben!" said Jimmy, still with his strange smile. 

Ans. Jimmy, sitll with his strange smile, greeted Ben. 

13) Jimmy said "I don't know that it makes much differences, now." 

Ans. Jimmy said that he did not know that it made much differences, then. 

14) "Guess you're mistaken, Mr Spencer," he said. 

Ans. He told Mr Spencer that he guessed that he were mistaken. 

15) Ben said, "Didn't believe I recognise you."

 Ans. Ben said that he did not believe that he recognised him (Jimmy).

Affirmative to negative / Vice Versa

1) You are not a bad fellow at heart. (Make affirmative)

2) He had expected to stay only about three months. (Make it negative)

Transformation of Sentences
