The soldier mentioned in the poem is one who has probably taken part in a war and now lies dead in the open valley.

 * The soldier is lying open-mouthed in the sun-soaked bed of nature in the beautiful green valley which is flooded with sunligh from the top of the mountain.   His head is on the pillow made of fern.  He lies stretching his body in the heavy undergrowth of the valley. His feet are among the flowers.  He looks pale.  He has a gentle smile on his face.  His smile is innocent like  an infant.  The humming insects do not disturb his sleep at all.  He sleeps peacefully keeping his  one hand on his breast.  But suddenly it is discovered that there are two red holes on his side.  This proves that the soldier is already dead.

ANS .  Arthur Rimbaud is a war poet.  In his poem "Asleep in the Valley", he expresses his anti-war feelings. He says that war is nothing but a butchery of young boys in the battlefield. He brings out the futility of war choosing a contradictory setting in a green valley.   The  Green grass, flowers and the stream symbolize life.  But the soldier lying on the sun-warmed grass is dead.  It is Ironically means that the source of life, the sun, fails to bring back the life of the dead soldier.  So, human life on earth is useless in the context of war.  This idea is presented ironically  in the poem.

Ans: 

The poem "Asleep in the Valley" highlights the beauty of a small green valley.  A river flows through it.  There a young soldier is sleeping peacefully in the sun-warmed grass.  But in fact he died of two bullet wounds in battle.  And he is asleep forever.  The poet urges nature to keep his body warm.  Nature cannot bring back the life of a soldier.  The poet's point of view here is to express the futility of warfare.  And this point of view has been expressed ironically in the title of the poem in a subtle  manner.  So, the title of the the poem is justified.

'The two red holes' here signify bullet wounds that had killed the young soldier.

It is very clear from Arthur Rimbaud’s poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’ that the poet is a fierce opponent of war and war-related issues.  To him, war means horror and the merciless butchery of a promising young man.  The brutality of the war and the sympathy for the tragic consequences of the soldiers' lives are embedded in such expressions, as "pale in  his warm sun-soaked bed', and 'In his side there are two red holes".  The hypocrisy and deceptive nature of politicians, diplomats and war-mongers are revealed through the description of the guileless smile  of a dead young soldier.

Ans: *Here the 'woman' and the 'boy' refer to Mrs Jones  and Roger.

*Mrs. Jones easily understood Roger's mind.  She realized that Roger was not a hard core criminal.  He was afraid of the lady and was ashamed of himself.  Mrs. Jones realized that Roger would never break her faith.  So, she did two things deliberately: she left the door open and she left her money bag on the day- bed.  At the same time, she stopped watching him.  She realized that Roger could overcome those temptations.  She took the risk but he took the risk knowingly.

*At that time Mrs. Jones left her purse on the day-bed.

  *Mrs. Jones grabbed Roger by  his shirt front and dragged him from the street straight to the middle of her room.  He had already noticed that Roger's face was dirty.  So he instructed Roger to go to the sink and wash his face.  Then she turned him loose.  After being released, Roger looked cautiously at the door and at Mrs. Jones, and finally went to wash his face. .  Then Roger asked this question.

 * Mrs. Jones replied that she would not take Roger anywhere with such a look on his face.
