          The narrator said this.

        After the departure of the girl,  a man got into the compartment of the narrator. The door of the compartment banged and the whole world was shut out again.The narrator returned to his berth. The guard blew  his whistle.The train began to move. Then the narrator said this.

       The narrator was totally blind. He did not want to reveal his blindness to others and draw sympathy in the process. So, he thought he had a game to play again.

OR,

     From the starting of the journey, the narrator concealed his blindness from the girl. Certainly, he did not want to reveal his  blindness to the new traveller too. So he thought he had a game to play again.
