Question. Justify the title of the poem "On Killing a Tree".
Ans:-
“On Killing a Tree” is a satirical poem which describes the ceremonial task of mankind to kill a tree. The poet ironically shows that man is very insensitive to the trees.
The tree has grown slowly consuming nutrients from the earth and absorbing air, water and sunlight for years. It feeds upon the earth's crust and gains much strength. So the tree must be killed. But it is not an easy task. A simple jab of knife will not destroy it. From close to the ground it will rise up again. So the tree should be tied with a rope and pulled out entirely. Its white root should be exposed. Then it should be browned, hardened, twisted and withered. Thus it is finally killed. So, the title of the poem is appropriate.
