 *Roger wanted to steal the purse of Mrs. Jones.  In doing so, he pulled Jones' bag from behind and fell.  Mrs. Jones pulled him to the front of the shirt.  She asked Roger if he would run if she turn him loose.  Roger replied that he must run.  That's why Mrs. Jones didn't release him.  Then Roger felt afraid.  He thought Mrs. Jones might put him in jail.  So in fear he said he was very sorry.

What did Mrs Jones do to change Roger's perception?

Roger wanted to snatch Mrs. Jones' handbag to buy a pair of blue suede shoes.  Mrs. Jones felt that Roger was not a tainted thief.  So She did not give him to the police.  She took her to his house, advised her to clean her dirty face, gave him food and shared the  experiences of her young days with him.  When Mrs. Jones finally gave him ten dollars to buy his desired shoes, he could not help but feel deep respect and gratitude for her.  Somehow he was able to say the word 'thank you'.  In this way Mrs. Jones transformed Roger into a good man.

When she came to learn his intention of stealing , she said that Roger could have asked her for some money . Roger was then deeply moved by the hospitality of Mrs. Jones. Her love and kindness changed his mind. After all, he was a victim of circumstances rather than a criminal. So, Roger did not run away though he found the door open.
