  *Mrs. Jones grabbed Roger by  his shirt front and dragged him from the street straight to the middle of her room.  He had already noticed that Roger's face was dirty.  So he instructed Roger to go to the sink and wash his face.  Then she turned him loose.  After being released, Roger looked cautiously at the door and at Mrs. Jones, and finally went to wash his face. .  Then Roger asked this question.

What did Mrs Jones do to change Roger's perception?

Roger wanted to snatch Mrs. Jones' handbag to buy a pair of blue suede shoes.  Mrs. Jones felt that Roger was not a tainted thief.  So She did not give him to the police.  She took her to his house, advised her to clean her dirty face, gave him food and shared the  experiences of her young days with him.  When Mrs. Jones finally gave him ten dollars to buy his desired shoes, he could not help but feel deep respect and gratitude for her.  Somehow he was able to say the word 'thank you'.  In this way Mrs. Jones transformed Roger into a good man.

ANS . Mrs. Jones is the speaker.

 Mrs. Jones could understand that Roger was hungry. Moreover, it was about midnight then. So, she decided to give him some food. she heated some lima beans and some ham. She also prepared some cocoa out of canned milk. After that she offered him a half of her ten- cent cake and told him the quoted sentence. The motherly feelings of Mrs. Jones is revealed in this line. She treated Roger with affection and hospitality. She tried to compensate for the lack of love and care in Roger's life.
