         The new passenger is the speaker here.

       The girl's eyes are mentioned here.

In the course of conversation, the narrator asked the new messenger if he could tell him if the girl had kept her hair long or short.  The passenger became puzzled to hear it. However,  he said that he noticed her eyes, not her hair. Then the speaker said that her eyes were beautiful but they were of no use to her.

          The eyes are useless to the girl as she was completely blind.
